Voice acting in gaming was still coming into its own during the PlayStation 2 era. The charm of Onimusha is only enhanced by the English audio track. Those looking for something beyond “rescuing a princess from another castle” will be met with an underlying plot about the demon world and channeling dark forces for evil. The game never wears out its welcome, as players are shuffled through battles and puzzles at a brisk pace.

In a campaign that may take less than seven hours, Onimusha is by no means a slog. In the first of a trilogy, players control Samanosuke in his quest to rescue Princess Yuki from hordes of demons and an evil version of Nobunga Oda (who we’ve seen as a pretty alright guy in other games). The Capcom trademarks of tank controls, fixed camera angles, and pre-rendered backgrounds were all there. Released in 2001 on the PlayStation 2, Onimusha was nestled between the Resident Evil and Devil May Cry franchises. That’s why–and in light of the Resident Evil 2 remake–I’m left wondering where on the spectrum the HD remaster of Onimusha: Warlords falls. So, just in case you missed out on that standard definition malarkey, here was the same game prettied up! Before the craze, however, Capcom dazzled with its Resident Evil remake for Gamecube that overhauled the visuals and added some nice gameplay touches to make the game feel less rooted in a time when those corny cutscenes were acceptable. Remasters and collections became a hot commodity, stuffing multiple games onto a disc because those paltry DVDs couldn’t compare to the infinite space of a Blu-ray. It was also a great time for publishers to sell you a product you may or may not have already owned. Even with the blockbuster success of the PlayStation 2, the real deluge of new gamers flocked to Nintendo’s quirky Wii and an online market where people could competitively shoot each other in the face across the world with ease. Despite bickering about 780p and 1080i, games had never looked better as polygons became densely packed together and textures were slicked with more pixels than ever before. It’s still not perfect, as you’ll encounter the common problem of doubling back on yourself once the fixed camera angles change and you don’t have the stick in the right place, but it works much better than what we had before. Onimusha: Warlords originally released with a tank-like control scheme very similar to those aforementioned Resident Evil titles, but these have been updated to allow use of the DualShock 4’s analogue sticks. Adding the ability to skip those scenes would surely have been a simple process, and yet the opportunity wasn’t taken. Combine this with the fact that you need to make your way back there from a save point anyway, and you’ve got a recipe that quickly leads to frustration. You’re forced to sit through them every single time, with some taking up a couple of minutes before you get another shot at things. If you get stuck at a boss fight that results in you taking multiple attempts before beating it, there’s no way to skip the introductory cutscenes before the fight.

What can’t be forgiven, though, is that this was a chance to introduce a much needed quality of life improvement to the experience, but it wasn’t taken. Those new to the experience will have an ever so slight adjustment period, but once you’re hooked, there’s no turning back. Beatable in the space of four hours, Capcom’s trip down memory lane is a welcome breath of fresh air.

It’s a game with just two means of attack, items that have obvious uses, and an upgrade system that is clear and easy to understand. Amongst swarms of 80 hour games packed to the brim with mechanics and systems, Onimusha: Warlords is a trip back to simpler times. In fact, it’s that basic nature that actually works in the game’s favour. The red variation is used to upgrade your weapons, blue orbs refill your magic meter, while yellow is traded for health. What sets it apart though is the gathering of Genma souls from every otherworldly creature you defeat. This gameplay loop remains untouched 18 years later, meaning it’s going to take some getting used to if this is your first exposure to the adventure of Samanosuke Akechi. You’ll explore Inabayama Castle through fixed camera angles, solving puzzles, collecting items, and of course fighting enemies as you go. For those who don’t know, Onimusha: Warlords plays a lot like an early Resident Evil title.
